Jonah too was one of the Envoys; 139 when he fled like a runaway slave onto a laden ship. 140 He (agreed to) cast lots, and he was among the losers, 141 And a fish swallowed him, and he was reproaching himself. 142 Had he not been one of those who glorify Allah, 143 He would certainly have remained inside the Fish till the Day of Resurrection. 144 ۞ We cast him out of the fish unto dry land and he was sick. 145 And We caused to grow over him a tree, a gourd. 146 And We sent him to a hundred thousand, rather they exceeded. 147 and they believed, and We gave them enjoyment for awhile. 148 Now ask them (O Muhammad): Hath thy Lord daughters whereas they have sons? 149 Or created We the angels females while they were witnesses? 150 Lo! verily it is of their falsehood that they say: 151 "God has begotten (children)?" They are liars indeed! 152 Did He (then) choose daughters rather than sons? 153 What is the matter with you? How do you form your judgement? 154 “So do you not ponder?” 155 Or, do you have a clear authority? 156 Then bring your book, if you are truthful. 157 And they have made between Him and the jinn a kinship whereas the jinn assuredly know that they are to be brought up 158 Glory be to Allah (for freedom) from what they describe; 159 Except the chosen bondmen of Allah. 160 Lo! verily, ye and that which ye worship, 161 Ye cannot excite (anyone) against Him. 162 Except such as are (themselves) going to the blazing Fire! 163 There is not one of us (angels) but has his known place (or position); 164 and, verily, we too are ranged [before Him in worship]; 165 “And indeed we are those who say His purity.” 166 What though they would say, 167 "If only we had had before us a Message from those of old, 168 we would surely have been God's chosen servants," 169 But when it came to them, they rejected it. They shall soon come to know (the end of such an attitude). 170 And verily Our word went forth of old unto Our bondmen sent (to warn) 171 That they verily would be helped, 172 And that Our host, they verily would be the victors. 173 So withdraw from them (O Muhammad) awhile, 174 and see, and soon they too shall see. 175 Do they want to hasten Our punishment? 176 When that chastisement will descend upon their courtyard, evil shall that Day be for those who had been warned. 177 Hence, turn thou aside for a while from them, 178 And watch, for they will soon see. 179 Glory be to thy Lord, the Lord of Glory, above that they describe! 180 and peace be upon the Messengers, 181 And all praise is due to God alone, the Sustainer of all the worlds! 182
