[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 I do not ask any recompense of you for this. My reward is due from none but the Lord of all the worlds. 145 (Do you think) you will be left secure here 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 "And ye carve houses out of (rocky) mountains with great skill. 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 “And do not follow those who exceed the limits.” 151 “Those who spread turmoil in the earth, and do no reform.” 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 159
