The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night enshrouding 1 and by the day when it unveils. 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 Verily your endeavour is diverse. 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,- 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 But he who does not give and is unconcerned, 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance. 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 Now I have warned you of a Fire that flames, 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 And no one has with him any boon for which he should be rewarded, 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
