(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 When their brother Salih said to them: Will you not guard (against evil)? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 “And do not follow those who exceed the limits.” 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel; it has a right to drink (water), and you have a right to drink (water) (each) on a day, known. 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
