Suad, I swear by the Quran, full of admonition. 1 But nay - they who are bent on denying the truth are lost in [false] pride, and [hence] deeply in the wrong. 2 How many a generation have We destroyed before them, and they [then] called out; but it was not a time for escape. 3 Now these [people] deem it strange that a warner should have come unto them from their own midst - and [so] the deniers of the truth are saying: "A [mere] spellbinder is he, a liar! 4 Maketh he the gods One God? Verily that is a thing astounding! 5 And the Council of them depart, saying 'Go! Be steadfast to your gods; this is a thing to be desired. 6 "We have not heard (the like) of this among the people of these later days. This is nothing but an invention! 7 Has the reminder been revealed to him from among us? Nay! they are in doubt as to My reminder. Nay! they have not yet tasted My chastisement! 8 Or do they hold the treasures of the mercy of your Lord, the Almighty, the Great Bestower? 9 Or, is theirs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them? Then let them ascend by (their) means! 10 The army is defeated as (were) the confederates. 11 Before them (were many who) belied Messengers, the people of Nuh (Noah); and 'Ad; and Fir'aun (Pharaoh) the man of stakes (with which he used to punish the people), 12 and Thamood, and the people of Lot, and the men of the Thicket - those were the parties; 13 None of them was such that it did not deny the Noble Messengers, therefore My punishment became inevitable. 14
