A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 "They will all be gathered together - on the appointed time of the known day." 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten - 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
