The Comet (Al-Taareq)
17 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Town (Al-Balad) before The Moon (Al-Qamar)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I swear by the heaven and the comer by night; 1 Do you know what al-tariq is? 2 It is the star that shines with a piercing brightness -- 3 No human soul but hath a guardian over it. 4 So let man look - from what is he created. 5 He is created from a water gushing forth. 6 emanating from between the loins and the ribs. 7 He certainly has the power to bring him back to life. 8 The Day when all the secrets (deeds, prayers, fasting, etc.) will be examined (as to their truth). 9 He will have no strength or helper. 10 Consider the heavens, ever-revolving, 11 and the replenishing earth, 12 Most surely it is a decisive word, 13 not a flippant jest. 14 Indeed, they are planning a plan, 15 and I am cunningly devising. 16 So give a respite to the disbelievers. Deal thou gently with them for a while. 17
