Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha, Meem. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night – indeed it is We Who warn. 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Rather they are in doubt, playing. 9 Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. 12 How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! 27 Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
