In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
KAF HA YA 'AIN SAD. 1 This is an account of your Lord's mercy bestowed upon His servant Zachariah, 2 When he quietly called his Lord 3 And said: "O my Lord, my bones decay, my head is white and hoary, yet in calling You, O Lord, I have never been deprived. 4 And now I fear my kinsfolk after I am gone; and my wife is barren. So give me, from Thee, a kinsman 5 who will be my heir and the heir of the family of Jacob. Lord, make him a person who will please you". 6 We answered his prayers with the glad news of the birth of a son by the name of John and told him, "We have never given such a name to anyone else." 7 "My Lord!" [said Zachariah], "How shall I have a son when my wife is barren and I have reached such extreme old age?" 8 He said: So (it will be). Thy Lord saith: It is easy for Me, even as I created thee before, when thou wast naught. 9 He said, "My Lord, grant me a sign!" He said, "Your sign will be that you will not speak to anyone for three successive days and nights, although sound in body." 10 Then Zachariah came forth from the shrine to his people and told them by signs to glorify the Lord morning and evening. 11 'O John, take the Book forcefully'; and We gave him judgment, yet a little child, 12 and We also endowed him with tenderness and purity, and he was exceedingly pious 13 And was good to his parents and not forceful, nor disobedient. 14 Peace be upon him the day he was born, and the day he will die, and the day he will be raised up alive. 15
