The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 And We behold it nigh. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and all those on earth. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 who guard their privates 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
