The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 Arise and warn, 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 and flee from the statues! 5 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 6 be patient unto your Lord. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 That Day will be a difficult day 9 and it will not be easy for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 And sons to be by his side!- 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give yet more! 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 I will constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 May he be condemned! 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 Then he looked round; 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others]. 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It spares not (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything unburnt)! 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 and it has nineteen angelic keepers. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
