The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 Thinketh he, that none hath power over him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Deemest he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?- 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road... 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 (It is) the freeing of a slave, 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 an orphaned relative 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
