He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 when the blind came to him. 2 And what would make you know that he would purify himself, 3 Or that he may accept advice, so the advice may benefit him. 4 As for he who is sufficed 5 Unto him thou attendest. 6 though you will not be questioned even if he never purifies himself. 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 him didst thou disregard! 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 Exalted (in dignity), purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Perish man! how ungrateful he is! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm! He creates and proportions him, 19 and made the path of guidance easy for him to follow. 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 and then, if it be His will, He shall raise him again to life, 22 Indeed, he has not fulfilled that which He has ordered him. 23 Then let mankind look at his food - 24 It is We Who pour forth water, pouring, 25 Thereafter We cleave the earth in clefts, 26 to yield therein corn, 27 And grapes and fodder, 28 olives, dates, 29 And enclosed gardens luxuriant. 30 and fruits and fodder 31 for you and for your herds to delight in. 32 But when the Shout cometh 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 mother, father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 Some faces on that day will be radiant, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news; 39 but some faces will be covered with dust 40 Darkness will cover them, 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
