And when the messengers came unto the family of Lot, 61 he said, "You are strangers [to me]." 62 They said: nay! we have come to thee with that whereof they have been dubitating. 63 We have come to you for a genuine purpose and We are true in what we say. 64 Therefore go forth with your followers in a part of the night and yourself follow their rear, and let not any one of you turn round, and go forth whither you are commanded. 65 And We informed him the decision of this command, that at morning the root of the disbelievers would be cut off. 66 And there came the people of the city rejoicing 67 [Lot] said, "Indeed, these are my guests, so do not shame me. 68 "But fear Allah, and shame me not." 69 They answered: "Have we not forbidden thee [to offer protection] to any kind of people?" 70 [Lot] said, "These are my daughters - if you would be doers [of lawful marriage]." 71 By thy life, they wandered blindly in their dazzlement, 72 Then the (Awful) Cry overtook them at the sunrise. 73 And We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay. 74 Indeed in this are signs for people who perceive. 75 Indeed, it is on a way which still exists. 76 Verily in that is a sign for the believers. 77 Since the People of the Forest were unjust, 78 We afflicted them with punishment. Both people had clear (divine) authority among them. 79
