In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Kaf Ha Ya 'Ayn Sad. 1 This is an account of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zechariah 2 When he called out his Lord (Allah) a call in secret, 3 He said: My Lord! surely my bones are weakened and my head flares with hoariness, and, my Lord! I have never been unsuccessful in my prayer to Thee: 4 Indeed, I fear my kinsmen who will succeed me, for my wife is barren. Grant me a kinsman 5 who will be my heir and the heir of the family of Jacob. Lord, make him a person who will please you". 6 [Thereupon the angels called out unto him: "O Zachariah! We bring thee the glad tiding of [the birth of] a son whose name shall be John. [And God says,] "Never have We given this name to anyone before him." 7 He submitted, “My Lord – how can I have a son whereas my wife is barren and I have reached infirmity due to old age?” 8 He said: So shall it be, your Lord says: It is easy to Me, and indeed I created you before, when you were nothing. 9 [Zechariah] said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three nights, [being] sound." 10 Thereupon Zechariah came out from the sanctuary and directed his people by gestures to extol His glory by day and by night. 11 O Yahya! take hold of the Book with strength, and We granted him wisdom while yet a child 12 And piety (for all creatures) as from Us, and purity: He was devout, 13 And dutiful toward his parents. And he was not arrogant, rebellious. 14 Hence, [God's] peace was upon him on the day when he was born, and on the day of his death, and will be [upon him] on the day when he shall be raised to life [again]. 15
