The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists), 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Read, for your Lord is most beneficent, 3 who taught by the Pen, 4 taught man what he did not know. 5 By no means: Verily man exorbitateth. 6 for he believes himself to be self-sufficient. 7 Surely! Unto your Lord is the return. 8 Have you seen the one who prohibits 9 A bondman of Ours when he prayeth 10 Do you think he is rightly guided, 11 Or enjoineth piety? 12 What will happen if the prohibiting rejects the Truth and turns away from it!? 13 Does he not know that God observes all things? 14 Yes certainly, if he does not desist, We will seize him by the forelock. 15 a lying, sinful forelock. 16 So, let him call upon his way! 17 We will call the guards of Hell (to deal with him)! 18 No indeed! Do not obey him, but prostrate yourself and come closer to God. ۩ 19
