۞ We gave Abraham aforetime his rectitude -- for We knew him -- 51 Abraham asked his father and his people, "What are these statues which you worship?" 52 They answered: "We found our forefathers worshipping them." 53 He said, "You were certainly, you and your fathers, in manifest error." 54 They said: "Are you speaking in earnest, or only jesting?" 55 Abraham replied, "Your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, who created them, and I bear witness to that. 56 And, by Allah, I shall circumvent your idols after ye have gone away and turned your backs. 57 He broke them all into pieces, except their great one so that they might return to it. 58 They said: Who has done this to our gods? Most surely he is one of the unjust. 59 Said some [of them]: "We heard a youth speak of these [gods with scorn]: he is called Abraham." 60 The others said: "Bring him, then, before the eyes of the people that they may see (what will be done to him)." 61 "Did you do this to our gods, O Abraham?" they enquired. 62 He said, "Rather, this - the largest of them - did it, so ask them, if they should [be able to] speak." 63 Then gathered they apart and said: Lo! ye yourselves are the wrong-doers. 64 But then they relapsed into their former way of thinking and said: "Thou knowest very well that these [idols] cannot speak!" 65 Abraham said: "Do you, then, worship beside Allah a thing that can neither benefit you nor hurt you? 66 Shame on you and on that you worship other than Allah! Have you no understanding' 67 They said, 'Burn him, and help your gods, if you would do aught.' 68 We said: O fire! be thou cool and peace unto Ibrahim. 69 They sought to outwit him, but We made them the worst of losers. 70 We took Abraham and Lot safely to the land in which We had sent blessings to the worlds. 71 And We bestowed on him Isaac and, as an additional gift, (a grandson), Jacob, and We made righteous men of every one (of them). 72 And We made them into leaders to guide people in accordance with Our command, and We inspired them to good works, and to establish Prayers and to give Zakah. They worshipped Us alone. 73 We bestowed upon Lot sound judgement and knowledge, and We delivered him from the city that was immersed in foul deeds. They were indeed a wicked people, exceedingly disobedient. 74 Thus We admitted him to Our grace. He is surely one of the righteous. 75
