The great ones among Pharaoh's people said: "Verily, this is indeed a sorcerer of great knowledge, 109 and said, "He wants to expel you from your land." They asked (others), " what is your opinion in the matter? 110 They answered: "Let him and his brother wait awhile, and send unto all cities heralds 111 “To bring all the expert magicians to you.” 112 And the sorcerers came unto Pharaoh [and] said: "Verily, we ought to have a great reward if it is we who prevail." 113 He said: Yes, and you shall certainly be of those who are near (to me). 114 They said, "O Moses, either you throw [your staff], or we will be the ones to throw [first]." 115 He said: Cast. So when they cast, they deceived the people's eyes and frightened them, and they produced a mighty enchantment. 116 And We inspired to Moses, "Throw your staff," and at once it devoured what they were falsifying. 117 ۞ Thus the truth prevailed, and that which they had brought vanished. 118 So they were defeated there and then, and were returned disgraced. 119 and the magicians flung themselves prostrate, 120 And said: "We have come to believe in the Lord of all the worlds, 121 the Sustainer of Moses and Aaron!" 122 Said Pharaoh: "Have you come to believe in him ere I have given you permission? Behold, this is indeed a plot which you have cunningly devised in this [my] city in order to drive out its people hence! But in time you shall come to know, [my revenge]: 123 I shall assuredly cut off alternately your hands and feet, then I shall crucify you all together.' 124 They said: Surely to our Lord shall we go back: 125 You would punish us only because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they were shown to us. Our Lord, pour patience upon us, and cause us to die in a state of submission to You." 126
