Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the Dawn, 1 and the ten nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departs. 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 The people of many-columned lram. 7 the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)? 10 They were tyrants in the land 11 spreading in them much corruption? 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 By no means! But ye honour not the orphan, 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 and you devour the inheritance with greed, 19 And you love wealth with immense love. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 So on that day, no one punishes like He does! 25 And no one binds like He does! 26 O satisfied soul, 27 return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing! 28 Join My servants. 29 into My Paradise. 30
