A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and many from the later generations. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Therefore (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
