The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 and defilement flee! 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! 7 When the Trumpet is sounded, 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 and it will not be easy for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 And children to be by his side! 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give him even more! 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 Then he looked, 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 It scorches people's skin 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
