Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 And by ten nights, 2 and the even and the odd, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad, 6 Who were very tall like lofty pillars, 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 And multiplied therein corruption. 12 Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 As for the human being, when his Lord tests him, honors him, and grants him bounty, he says, "God has honored me". 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 No! But you do not honor the orphan 17 and you urge not the feeding of the needy, 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 And ye love wealth with inordinate love! 20 No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 nor will any bind as He binds. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 and enter My Paradise.” 30
