The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 stay away from sins 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 When the Horn is blown, 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 and it will not be easy for the unbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 Then he frowned and he looked in a bad tempered way; 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others]. 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 And what knoweth thou that which the Scorching Fire? 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 Above it are nineteen guards. 30 And We have set none but angels as guardians of the Fire, and We have fixed their number (19) only as a trial for the disbelievers, in order that the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) may arrive at a certainty [that this Quran is the truth as it agrees with their Books i.e. their number (19) is written in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] and the believers may increase in Faith (as this Quran is the truth) and that no doubts may be left for the people of the Scripture and the believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) and the disbelievers may say: "What Allah intends by this (curious) example?" Thus Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none can know the hosts of your Lord but He. And this (Hell) is nothing else than a (warning) reminder to mankind. 31
