Thamud denied the messengers 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 I am for you an honest Messenger. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 They slew the she-camel, but later became regretful 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
