Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha Mim. 1 By the luminious Book. 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 therein every wise bidding 4 The command that We have been sending 5 A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty. 7 There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 and pleasant things in which they delighted! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
