The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient (O Muhammad SAW), with a good patience. 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 And We behold it nigh. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 save those that pray 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
