The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Read! In the name of your Lord, who created: 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 Who teacheth by the pen, 4 taught man what he did not know. 5 No! [But] indeed, man transgresses 6 because he thinks that he is independent. 7 Indeed towards your Lord only is the return. 8 Seest thou one who forbids- 9 a servant (of Allah) when he prays? 10 Do you think he is rightly guided, 11 Or enjoins piety? 12 What is your opinion – if he denies and turns away, how wretched will be his state! 13 Does he not know that God sees? 14 No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock - 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 Then let him summon his council, 17 We shall call on the guards of Hell. 18 By no means! Obey not thou him. Continue to adore, and continue to draw nigh. ۩ 19
