The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the declining star, 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he deluded; 2 Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire. 3 It is but a revelation revealed. 4 Bestowed on him by the Supreme Intellect, 5 Lord of power and wisdom. So he acquired poise and balance, 6 while he was in the highest horizon; 7 then he drew near, and became close 8 he was but two bows' length or even nearer, 9 When He revealed to His votary what He revealed. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he saw? 12 And verily he saw him yet another time 13 At the farthest lote-tree; 14 Near it is the Paradise of Abode. 15 When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree, 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 Certainly he saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 HAVE YOU, then, ever considered [what you are worshipping in] Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, 19 And Manat, the third, the last? 20 What! For you the son, and for Him the daughter? 21 That indeed is a division most unfair! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
