We shall make satan the companion of whoever ignores the remembrance of the Beneficent God. 36 whereupon, behold, these [evil impulses] bar all such from the path [of truth,] making them think that they are guided aright! 37 To the extent that when the disbeliever will be brought to Us, he will say to his devil, “Alas – if only there was the distance* of east and west, between you and me!” – so what an evil companion** he is! (* Had I not listened to you. **They will be bound together in chains.) 38 It will be said [to such a person], "You have done wrong. Having partners in punishment will be of no avail to you today." 39 What, shalt thou make the deaf to hear, or shalt thou guide the blind and him who is in manifest error? 40 But if We should take you away, still We shall inflict retribution on them; 41 or We shall show you what We have promised them; for surely We have complete power over them. 42 So, hold fast to the Book that has been revealed to you, you are surely on the right path, 43 And verily it is an admonition unto thee and thy people; and presently ye will be questioned. 44 Ask all Our Messengers whom We sent before you whether We had appointed any deities beside the Merciful One to be worshipped. 45
