Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night – indeed it is We Who warn. 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]. 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." 22 God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. 23 "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned." 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29
