The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 and the day as it rises bright! 2 By (the mystery of) the creation of male and female;- 3 you strive in various ways. 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 and believes in the finest, 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 Surely We will ease his way unto adversity. 10 and what will his wealth avail him when he goes down [to his grave]? 11 Surely Ours is it to show the way, 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 Therefore I have warned you of a Fire blazing fiercely (Hell); 14 None shall enter it save the most wretched, 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 The pious ones will be safe from this fire 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 and confers no favor upon anyone for recompense 19 But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High; 20 And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction. 21
