The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 but We see it is nigh. 7 The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). 8 and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 tearing away his skin! 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
