Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By oath of the (particular) dawn. 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 And by the even and the odd, 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 [the people of] Iram the many-pillared, 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 and with the Thamud, who cut out [huge] rocks in the valley, 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah). 11 and exceeded in corruption therein. 12 Therefore your Lord let down upon them a portion of the chastisement. 13 for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me." 15 And when He proveth him, and so stinteth unto him his provision, he saith: 'my Lord hath despised me. 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 and you do not urge one another to feed the needy, 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 And you love wealth with immense love. 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He will say: "Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life." 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 nor will any bind as He binds. 26 [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul, 27 Return thou unto thy Sustainer, well-pleased [and] pleasing [Him]: 28 So enter among My (righteous) servants 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
