Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the Clear Book. 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 On which all affairs are sorted out and decided 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Rather they are in doubt, playing. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 Covering the people, this is a painful torment. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, 13 Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. 14 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' 15 The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure – We will indeed take revenge. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” 19 And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. 20 And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And the cornlands and the goodly sites 26 and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. 29
