The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 and the moon as it reflects the sun! 2 By the day when it glorifieth it. 3 and by the night as it envelopes the sun; 4 By the heaven and That which built it 5 by the earth and that (Power) which spread it out 6 Consider the human self, and how it is formed in accordance with what it is meant to be, 7 then inspired it to understand what was right and wrong for it. 8 Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds). 9 and he who corrupts it is sure to fail. 10 (The tribe of) Thamud denied (the truth) in their rebellious pride, 11 when their arch-criminal rose up in rage. 12 The Messenger of God told them, "This is a she-camel, belonging to God. Do not deprive her of her share of water". 13 Then they rejected him (as a false prophet), and they hamstrung her. So their Lord, on account of their crime, obliterated their traces and made them equal (in destruction, high and low)! 14 And He feared not the consequence thereof 15
