The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Recite thou in the name of thy Lord Who hath created 1 created man from a clot of congealed blood. 2 Read! Your Lord is the Most Bountiful One 3 who taught by the Pen, 4 taught man what he did not know. 5 Indeed, surely the human is very insolent 6 for he thinks himself self-sufficient. 7 Surely! Unto your Lord is the return. 8 Have you seen him who restrains 9 a servant [of God] from praying? 10 What is your opinion – if he were upon guidance, 11 or is concerned with God-consciousness? 12 Have you considered if he gives the lie to the truth and turns (his) back? 13 Does he not know that God observes all things? 14 Yes certainly, if he does not desist, We will seize him by the forelock. 15 A lying, sinful forehead. 16 Then let him summon his council, 17 We also shall call the infernal guards. 18 Nay, heed him not: But bow down in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah)! ۩ 19
