Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
I swear by the daybreak, 1 by the Ten (secret) Nights, 2 And the even and the odd, 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Aad - 6 the people of Iram, the city of many pillars, 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 And (with) Samood, who hewed out the rocks in the valley, 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 [It was they] who transgressed all bounds of equity all over their lands, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 so your Lord unleashed on them the scourge of punishment: 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 And when He proveth him, and so stinteth unto him his provision, he saith: 'my Lord hath despised me. 16 No! But you do not honor the orphan 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder, 21 and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!" 24 But on that Day none will punish as He (Allah) will punish, 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 O soul that art at rest! 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Join My worshipers and 29 And enter thou My Garden. 30
