a good many of olden times, 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
