And there are some who, though they say: "We believe in God and the Last Day," (in reality) do not believe. 8 They (try to) deceive God and those who believe, yet deceive none but themselves although they do not know. 9 Sick are their hearts, and God adds to their malady. For them is suffering for they lie. 10 And when it is said to them, Do not make mischief in the land, they say: We are but peace-makers. 11 Now surely they themselves are the mischief makers, but they do not perceive. 12 And when they are told, "Believe as other people believe," they answer, "Shall we believe as the weak-minded believe?" Oh, verily, it is they, they who are weak-minded - but they know it not! 13 When they meet the faithful they say: "We believe;" but when alone with the devils (their fellows), they say: "We are really with you; we were joking." 14 Allah will mock at them and prolong them in sin, blundering blindly. 15 Such are those who barter away guidance for error, their trade did not profit (them), nor are they guided. 16 Their parable is that of people who kindle a fire: but as soon as it has illumined all around them, God takes away their light and leaves them in utter darkness, wherein they cannot see: 17 Deaf, dumb, and blind, they shall never return. 18 Or (another similitude) is that of a rain-laden cloud from the sky: In it are zones of darkness, and thunder and lightning: They press their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning thunder-clap, the while they are in terror of death. But Allah is ever round the rejecters of Faith! 19 The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Every time it lights [the way] for them, they walk therein; but when darkness comes over them, they stand [still]. And if Allah had willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent. 20
