In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou enwrapped in thy robes, 1 stand up to pray for much of the night. 2 Half of it, or a little less than that, 3 Or increase a little upon it, and recite the Qur’an slowly in stages. 4 Verily We! anon We shall cast upon thee a weighty word. 5 Surely in the watches of the night the soul is most receptive and words more telling. 6 Indeed, for you by day is prolonged occupation. 7 And remember thou the name of thy Lord, and devote thyself to Him with an exclusive devotion. 8 Lord of the east and the west! No God is there but He! Wherefore take Him for thy trustee. 9 Bear patiently with what they say and with a fine abandonment forsake them. 10 And leave them to Me – these wealthy deniers – and give them some respite. 11 for with Us there are fetters, and a furnace, 12 And food that chokes and a painful punishment - 13 One Day the earth and the mountains will be in violent commotion. And the mountains will be as a heap of sand poured out and flowing down. 14 Surely We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We had sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. 15 In response Firaun disobeyed the Noble Messenger, so We seized him with a severe seizure. 16 How, then, will you guard yourselves, if you disbelieve, on the day which shall make children grey-headed? 17 Whereby heaven shall be split, and its promise shall be performed. 18 Indeed this is nothing but a Good Counsel; so let him who will take a way leading to his Lord. 19
