The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 arise and give warning! 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 And your clothing purify 4 Pollution shun! 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 When the trumpet is sounded,. 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 and designated for him ample wealth, 12 And children present [with him] 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around, 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
