Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the dawn, 1 And by oath of ten nights. 2 And by the even and the odd (of all the creations of Allah). 3 And the night when it departs. 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 ART THOU NOT aware of how thy Sustainer has dealt with [the tribe of] 'Ad, 6 [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars, 7 the like of whom no nation was ever created in the lands of the world? 8 And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley? 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 But when He tests him by restricting his provision, he says: 'My Lord has humiliated me' 16 By no means! But ye honour not the orphan, 17 and you urge not the feeding of the needy, 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 and why do you have an excessive love of riches? 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 and Gehenna is brought out, upon that day man will remember; and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 And none will bind as He will bind. 26 O thou peaceful soul! 27 Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
