Thamud denied the messengers 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 Do not cause her to suffer lest you become subject to the torment of the great day (of Judgment)." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 and torment struck them. In this there is evidence of the Truth, yet many people do not have any faith. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
