The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you who are clothed! 1 Arise and warn! 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 and flee from the statues! 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 but unto thy Sustainer turn in patience. 7 When the trumpet is sounded,. 8 So that is a tough day. 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 By no means! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation: 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 Then looked he, 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 I will soon fling him into hell. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
