A throng of the ancients 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 And the fellows on the left hand; how miserable shall the fellows on the left hand be! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 “And also our forefathers?” 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 "We are ruined, 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
