Stories (Al-Qasas)
88 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Ant (Al-Naml) before The Night Journey (Al-Isra)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ta. Sin. Mim. 1 These are the verses of the illuminating Book. 2 We [now] convey unto thee some of the story of Moses and Pharaoh, setting forth the truth for [the benefit of] people who will believe. 3 Truly Pharaoh elated himself in the land and broke up its people into sections, depressing a small group among them: their sons he slew, but he kept alive their females: for he was indeed a maker of mischief. 4 But We wanted to be gracious to those abased in the land, and to make them leaders and inheritors, 5 and to establish them in the land; and to show Pharaoh and Haman, and their armies, the very thing they dreaded. 6 And We inspired to the mother of Moses, "Suckle him; but when you fear for him, cast him into the river and do not fear and do not grieve. Indeed, We will return him to you and will make him [one] of the messengers." 7 And the family of Pharaoh took him up, that he might become for them an enemy and a sorrow, Lo! Pharaoh and Haman and their hosts were ever sinning. 8 The wife of Pharaoh said: "Here is a delight of the eye to me and to you. Do not kill him. Maybe he will prove useful for us, or we may adopt him as a son." They were unaware of the end of it all. 9 And the heart of the mother of Musa (Moses) became empty [from every thought, except the thought of Musa (Moses)]. She was very near to disclose his (case, i.e. the child is her son), had We not strengthened her heart (with Faith), so that she might remain as one of the believers. 10 And she said to the sister of (Moses), "Follow him" so she (the sister) watched him in the character of a stranger. And they knew not. 11 ۞ And We had aforetime forbidden foster-mothers for him; so she said: shall I direct you unto a household who will rear him for you and who will be unto him good counsellors? 12 Thus We restored him to his mother, so that she might be comforted and not grieve any more, and so that she would know that God's promise was true. But most of them do not realize this. 13
