The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 Lo! they behold it afar off 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). 17 and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
