The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the star when it setteth. 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 Nor doth he speak of (his own) desire. 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 Which one of mighty powers hath taught him, 5 Dhu Mirrah (free from any defect in body and mind), Fastawa [then he (Jibrael - Gabriel) rose and became stable]. [Tafsir At-Tabari]. 6 And reached the highest pinnacle. 7 and then drew near, and came close, 8 until he was but two bow-lengths away, or even nearer. 9 Thus He revealed unto His bondman whatsoever He revealed. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 What, will you dispute with him about what he sees! 12 And indeed he did see the Spectacle again. 13 At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary - 14 nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, 15 When there comes to the Lote Tree, that which comes 16 (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! 17 Indeed, he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you really considered al-Lat and al-"Uzza, 19 And another, the third (goddess), Manat? 20 Shall you have the male issues, and He the female issues? 21 that, lo and behold, is an unfair division! 22 these are nothing but names which you yourselves have devised, you and your forefathers. God has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord! 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 To Allah belongs the Eternal life and the first life. 25
