He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 because the blind man approached him! 2 What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace) 3 Or become reminded so that the reminder should profit him? 4 But the self-sufficient, 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 and fears (Allah), 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance. 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 lofty and pure, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and Pious and Just. 16 May man be slain – how ungrateful he is! 17 Of what substance God created him? 18 From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him, 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 Then He causes him to die, and puts him in his grave; 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will resurrect him (again). 22 Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 That We watered it in abundance. 25 and then We cleave the earth [with new growth,] cleaving it asunder, 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 And grapes and fodder, 28 olives, dates, 29 And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees, 30 And fruits and herbage 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 So when the deafening Shout arrives, 33 on the Day when each man shall flee from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 And his spouse and his son-- 36 Every man of them shall on that day have an affair which will occupy him. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 whereas some faces will be covered with dust 40 Darkness will cover them, 41 Such will be the Kafarah (disbelievers in Allah, in His Oneness, and in His Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him), etc.), the Fajarah (wicked evil doers). 42
