The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise and warn, 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 And do not confer favor to acquire more 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Leave Me Alone (to deal) with whom I created Alone (without any means, i.e. Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi)! 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 By no means! Verily he hath been unto Our signs a foe. 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 Then he beheld, 21 frowned and scowled; 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a human being!" 25 I will soon fling him into hell. 26 And what knoweth thou that which the Scorching Fire? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
